I once had to stay in Birmingham after a cancelled train. On leaving the station I was accosted by a drunk demanding cigarettes, who started swearing at me after I admitted I didn’t smoke. That’s my only experience of Birmingham, I have to assume it’s typical.

Have you not lived through the political shit show we’ve had? Brexit, COVID scandals, Boris Johnson, Farage, stagnating wages, poor productivity, inflation, high energy prices, NHS in crisis, housing shit show…and there’s no end in sight. Think the UK hasn’t been doing that badly is quite a willful refusal to see how we compare to the rest of the world and where we could have been if we functioned better.

randomly choosing a random outgroup to collectively hate must be ironically funny sometimes(see: jokes about the fr*nch) Genuinely there is no other reason. sometimes people will create justifications/other explanations for it but really its just absurdist humor with a pinch of tribalism. edit: i should add though, usually this type of humor is meant to be ironic by most of its participants. the more i think about it, the more it seems this is more rude than funny.

Look we made a bunch of overblown jokes against the French for a while…

…then they got BASED organizing ferociously for their workers’ rights…

…Then we stopped joking so much…

…and now they’re not doing so hot again.

I think there’s a causative effect here. Should the jokes continue in order to spur them to greatness once more, even if only out of spite?

I mean… Malibu Ken is … basically just Aesop Rock + Tobacco, right?

Like, the sub header/alt title for the album is ‘Aesop Rock and TOBACCO are Malibu Ken’.

Like how Garbology is Aesop Rock + Blockhead?

I… get that you can split hairs over exact naming schemes…

…but Malibu Ken just literally is Aesop Rock on vocals and lyrics, just as Garbology is Aesop Rock on vocals and lyrics. He just partnered with different musicians for the ‘beats’.

But anyway yes, Tobacco is fucking awesome, so is Black Moth Super Rainbow.

nothing sounds like how he … makes music. It’s incredible.

I know you think it’s pedantic, it’s just that the artist determines what is his personal work and what isn’t. If you look up Aesop Rock’s discography, Malibu Ken isn’t on it, but Garbology is.

It’s different because MK is a duo, where Garbology is an Aesop album that basically feats. Blockhead on every track.

                https://aesoprock.com/products/aesop-rock-tobacco-are-malibu-ken?_pos=1&_psq=malibu&_ss=e&_v=1.0

Aesop Rock sells Malibu Ken directly off his website, just as he does with Garbology.

                https://aesoprock.com/products/aesop-rock-x-blockhead-garbology?pr_prod_strat=jac&pr_rec_id=34c5e6824&pr_rec_pid=6714252820528&pr_ref_pid=4421860687920&pr_seq=uniform

‘Aesop Rock and Tobacco are Malibu Ken’

                vs.

                ‘Aesop Rock x Blockhead’

To me, this would imply Aesop Rock considers it part of his discography, his personal work.

Blockhead is also just one guy, a musician / producer, just like how Tobacco is just one guy, a musician / producer.

Garbology and Malibu Ken are both collabs between Aesop Rock and one other very talented musician.

If you’re going by discography lists put together by third parties like wikipedia or spotify or whatever, I’d say say that’s less of a direct source than… the actual artist’s official website.

Hell, even discogs.com shows Garbology and Malibu Ken in Aesop Rock’s discog, Garbology in Blockhead’s, and Malibu Ken in Tobacco’s.

                https://www.discogs.com/artist/28104-Aesop-Rock

                https://www.discogs.com/artist/142933-Blockhead

                https://www.discogs.com/artist/903328-Tobacco-3

Is … is there some interview Aesop gave where he specifically says he doesn’t consider Malibu Ken to be ‘his personal work’, but he does consider Garbology to be?

If yes, then I’ll happily stand corrected.

If no, then I don’t think your latter claim here has much merit.

Both are team up collab albums between two people.

Can I not be jazzed about the collab? Geez. It’s 2 of my favorite artists arguably randomly coming together to make magic.

I consider it an aesop album x Tobacco collab album so therefore it is also an aesop album

Sure, whatever. I just think the way shit is credited actually matters, e.g. “Run the Jewels” isn’t a Killer Mike album even though he’s on every track, just like “Kid A” isn’t a Thom Yorke album. Shobaleader One’s work is separate from Squarepusher even though it’s literally the same person.

Artists make subtle choices when crediting their work, but yeah it’s ultimately subjective so do you.
