Several prominent Muslim scholars have issued a rare religious decree or “fatwa”, calling on all Muslims and Muslim-majority countries to wage “jihad” against Israel after 17 months of devastating war against Palestinians residing in the besieged enclave.

Ali al-Qaradaghi, the secretary general of the International Union Of Muslim Scholars (IUMS), an organisation previously led by Yusuf al-Qaradawi, called on all Muslim countries on Friday “to intervene immediately militarily, economically and politically to stop this genocide and comprehensive destruction, in accordance with their mandate”.

“The failure of the Arab and Islamic governments to support Gaza while it is being destroyed is considered by Islamic law to be a major crime against our oppressed brothers in Gaza,” he said in the decree comprising some 15 points.

Qaradaghi is one of the region’s most respected religious authorities and his decrees carry significant weight among the world’s 1.7bn Sunni Muslims.

Muslim scholars are calling on fellow Muslims to fight back against genocide.

The problem is that they are scary words like “futwa” and “jihad” and, in the West, this language is seen as uncivilized and barbaric.

        Orientalism, in other words.

I mean at this point if you have seen what Israel has done, unfiltered by the media, then there is almost nothing that will shake people out of their views. If you support Israel after knowing that they purposefully shell hospitals and children, then you will most likely keep supporting Israel no matter what. Same goes for those who oppose Israel and it’s genocide.

Right, but whether or not it’s disputed outside of Lemmy doesn’t change the fact that it’s a genocide. The only people who don’t think it’s a genocide are those in favor of the genocide and the genuinely uninformed/propagandized.

neutrality in the face of oppression is just siding with the oppressor for cowards. you’re either against genocide or you’re for it. your position here is clear.

“Unbiased” does not mean “statistical mean”.

If 1 + 1 = 2, then it equals two irrespective of anyone’s opinion on the matter.

But zeroth of all, there is no such thing as an unbiased take, because no one is without bias.

              • Well, I hope we can agree that genocides have occurred in history. Putting this article aside, how do you propose a genocide be reported on as it’s occurring without being biased?

I think for now most objective would be “actions consistent with genocide” and war crimes. That being said most prominent human rights organizations do classify it as genocide. Here i think bias was referring to nonfactual reporting, so translations or what some people dispute bears no value.

Not sure what your translation says, fatwa or not doesn’t really matter or do shit for the Palestinians.
But I do know MEE is a UK based garbage source.

    • Yes because as we know western media is known for having a fair and unbaised view whenever a native people fight back against a foreign military occupation. Especially when said resistance is supported by a non Christian people who also dont fit the arbitrary definition of white.

I’d say Iran and Hizbollah in Lebanon haven’t exactly ignored the situation either, and have paid a fairly heavy price themselves thus far.

    • In yemen the houthis (aka not the government) is willing to do anything, the actural government only makes statements and votes in the UN while taking no real action.

Lol I was thinking the whole western world accepting all Israeli transgressions against international law, and rewarding her with political shielding, vetos, and their own citizens tax money… And double standards.

No where in the world is it acceptable to use a military against unarmed civilians with sustained force. But Israel gets her pass… Why?

Muftis (and scholars) occupy a prominent position in Islam but their departments often sit within the state. They owe their existence to the state governments they’re in. Even if this decree carries weight among muslim communities where fatwas are often studied to their minute detail, respective muslim governments ultimately have the final say on whether they’re willing to adopt their decree. With leaders like MBS and others, I doubt there’s real appetite for change even if the fatwa in question is in line with traditional islamic laws.

Everything is a core pillar of islam depending on if you are trying to promote the religion of peace, drink beer and eat bacon, take slaves or stone a child to death for being raped.

Yeah like every religion has never been used to justify literally anything. Saying the fucking religim that treats women like shit and kills lbtq people has “protecting the weak” as a core pillar is same as saying musk did an awkward gesture and his points on twitter make sense. It’s lying with an agenda.

Do women suddenly not wear burqas and they are allowed to go outside, drive cars, own property in all the muslim countries that are not westernized and are therefor closest to true islam? Hows the gay communities doing there?

This has nothing to do with israel genociding a weak group they have not managed to assimilate or make diplomatic deals with for decades.

This is anout you claiming islam protects the weak, which it does as much as russia or israel.

                • Its a woman’s choice in most non westernized Muslim countries, those countries, incidentally, containing a minority of Muslims.

Incidentally westernized Muslims countries tend to have the harshest restrictions, like Saudi Arabia.

As far as gay communities it, like it always does, depends on local culture. Pakistan officially recognizes transgender women; Saudi, the West’s darling, stones gay people. Iran has multiple gay organizations that are recognized by the state, and Sudan was influenced by Christians so they really hate the gays. As it turns out different people and cultures believe different things regardless of religion.

Almost like people are people, you bigoted fuck.

Islam is a religion of peace, and does explicitly promote protecting the weak and doing charity. Its a large reason why Jews were safe in Palestine for centuries before zionist decided to hijack the region.

If bigots like you didn’t exist, maybe we could move on from demonizing 1/8th of humanity and start to deal with the actual problems you mentioned.

I’m only surprised it took so long. I would have thought they’d done this long ago, or at least considered it as obvious. Haven’t they been waging Jihad against Israel since its inception?

Most Arab countries are in bed with Israel. Anyone who stokes the flames there goes to jail. Their top imams speaking out is not a big deal by itself but it does indicate a turning of the tide.
