Ohhhh…this provides much needed context & clarity that I didn’t have before. When I hear there’s been a ‘shooting’ in America, while this is technically correct, I don’t think it’s one person shooting another. I hear ‘shooting’, and I think one or more shooters/multiple targets/largely indiscriminate just one group vs another.
By all accounts, this is very discriminatory & targeted. Obviously. I would word it as “Jonathan Joss murdered”, then explain he was gunned down by a deranged homophobe.
Until just now, I genuinely assumed Mr. Joss got caught up in a mall or gang shooting. This is especially tragic & inexcusable, such targeted hatred.
Tbh, most “shootings” in America aren’t active shooter events in the way you expect. Most are targeted and related to other crime (be it robbery, revenge, domestic assault, etc), some fit the definition of mass shooting (4 or more shot incl shooter) but it’s gang/crime/drug related and often in those cases a bystander or two, more fall in that category than random mass shooter events by an order of magnitude.
The mass/school shootings you imagine are actually incredibly rare statistically, something like 0.00094% last time I checked. In fact even most “school shootings” are the same, with one or no people injured, and targeted. Or even accidental discharge with no injury by the school cop or a suicide in a recently shut down forever school at 3am in a car in the parking lot (real events counted in everytown’s school shootings numbers a few years ago).
Hate crimes are for sure more common, actually.

Statement from Tristan Kern de Gonzales
Husband of Jonathan Joss
My husband Jonathan Joss and I were involved in a shooting while checking the mail at the site of our former home. That home was burned down after over two years of threats from people in the area who repeatedly told us they would set it on fire. We reported these threats to law enforcement multiple times and nothing was done.
Throughout that time we were harassed regularly by individuals who made it clear they did not accept our relationship. Much of the harassment was openly homophobic.
When we returned to the site to check our mail we discovered the skull of one of our dogs and its harness placed in clear view. This caused both of us severe emotional distress. We began yelling and crying in response to the pain of what we saw.
While we were doing this a man approached us. He started yelling violent homophobic slurs at us. He then raised a gun from his lap and fired.
Jonathan and I had no weapons. We were not threatening anyone. We were grieving. We were standing side by side. When the man fired Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life.
Jonathan is my husband. He gave me more love in our time together than most people ever get. We were newlyweds. We picked Valentines Day. We were in the process of looking for a trailer and planning our future.
He was murdered by someone who could not stand the sight of two men loving each other. I was with him when he passed. I told him how much he was loved.
To everyone who supported him, his fans, his friends, know that he valued you deeply. He saw you as family.
My focus now is on protecting Jonathan’s legacy and honoring the life we built together.
If your concern is how someone coped with trauma or how loudly they speak when recounting injustice and being ignored by authorities then you never truly cared about my husband.
Jonathan saved my life. I will carry that forward. I will protect what he built.

I’m sure that some closeted self-loathing gay folks do this kind of shit, but if you’re seriously suggesting that the only people who are willing to throw out homophobic slurs and violence towards gay people are other gay people then I don’t know what to say. Conservatives are hateful bigots to virtually every minority group on the planet, but only with homophobia are they accused of being the thing they’re being hateful towards. Why? You have to be right, of course, demographically speaking. There’s no way the amount of bigotry we see could come entirely from a fraction of a minority, as the person above you is implying.
That said, it is difficult to reconcile that with a key feature of homophobic (and transphobic, etc.) rhetoric that is not present in racist beliefs: homosexuals are accused of choosing to be gay.
Which, of course, is as absurd as accusing someone of choosing to be black. And yet we hear one of these constantly, and never the other.
How is it even possible for someone to think that sexuality is a choice, unless they are constantly and actively “choosing” their own? That’s not a rhetorical question. I genuinely can’t make sense of it and that bothers me deeply.

Why are you so keen to blame homophobic violence on gay people?
I’m not blaming gays in general, but I also have a lot of life experience that demonstrates that often the loudest, most vicious homophobic politicians, preachers, etc., almost always eventually get caught with gay men. If you are that angry about gays simply existing, it is likely because you have unresolved internal hatred.
It is simply a fact that unhappy closeted gays are often the gay community’s worst enemies. I don’t blame “gays” for that, I blame a homophobic society that demonizes gay orientations, and forces weak people to deny their own truth.
What do you think the percentage of homophobic violence is carried out by cishets Vs closeted homosexuals? Because from my experience it is overwhelmingly bigoted cishets doing this sorta shit.
In place of trying to extrapolate a whole-arse sexual complex of someone neither of us know anything about I’d prefer to stick with what’s more likely.
