To be honest, this gamer is totally gob smacked on the attitude that people have when it comes to new console releases.
Sure it was time for a change. But is it worth the hassle and aggravation?
I’m not the one to jump on the NCHW (New Console Hype Wagon), just for the sake of popularity. I pay attention to the ebb and flow of popularity.
I learned this lesson all to well when the SEGA Saturn was released in 1994. Like everyone else in the console video game space at the time, I jumped on the hype and pre-relase popularity.
But in the end, after it was all said and done, it was a total flop. The lesson that I learned is plain and simple.
Slow down and relax. Let others make the mistake. Let them make the mistake you’ve made.
But this time around, the hype was justified. The Switch 2 is one of those consoles that lives up to the hype. Where the games go from here is up to NINTENDO and the publishers. But take it easy, Let the hype train enter the station and then buy the system. I’m telling you, it’s worth the wait.

This. Still dont understand how people actively let Nintendo piss in their face and shit in their mouth for nothing but enjoyment. Nintendo fans just give off an immense aura of “briandead coonsomer” to me. Literally just emulate it. Same game, better performance and cheaper, wheres the downsides?
Are you constantly baffled by why people buy consoles instead of simply building a PC, researching and configuring the right emulators, ripping or sourcing the desired ROMs, and getting it all working? We as techies are by far the minority, most people just want to play the game and don’t enjoy the tinkering.
No, completely understand that ofcourse. But Nintendo fans prove time and time again they are suffering from Stockholm Syndrome by talking down the people who’ve had enough of Nintendos bs and lovingly run back to purchase the next overpriced and underperforming console.
Dont get me wrong, i completely understand why non-tech people dont want to put up with it and that we techies are a minority. What baffles me is the undending devotion the Nintendo fans have for their abuser.
I just don’t think the complaints about Nintendo are half as bad as some of the abuses coming out of the rest of the industry. Nintendo treats their workers well, they don’t exploit addicts with gambling-based business models, they sell complete products on day 1 rather than rushing out unfinished disasters. And yes, I like their games, I like them a lot more than pretty much anything else coming out of the mainstream AAA space.
No corporation is perfect, and there is no ethical consumption under capitalism, but they really could be so much worse and I just don’t get how the level of vitriol directed towards Nintendo is only directed towards Nintendo and not anyone else.
Most of all though, I’m just tired of whenever the circlejerk turns from “I personally don’t like Nintendo” to “I will actively insult anyone else who has the nerve to like something I don’t like, how dare they.” I’m tired of being talked down to for the unforgivable sin of liking something. Can we at least fucking stop with that shit? Please?

Im not complaining about people liking Nintendos games. Neither am I saying that other AAA studios are flawless. Nintendo more often than not release finished products, apart from others (and with a few exclusions such as scarlet and Violet iirc). Nintendo is not a good company, neither is most of AAA studios. I would probably be more likely to play a Nintendo game myself rather than orter AAA titles. If a person has brain cells enough to recognize Nintendo and the industries flaws they are not the target of my complaints. Im sorry there are people out there worse than me who would continue to shit on you even after provingly displaying insight on the matter. Yet my point stands, people oblivious to the situation who keep coming back to Nintendo, without calling them out and letting every poor decision slide are part of the problem.
I honestly dont know about how Nintendo treats their workers, and honestly, if a Japan-based company has better work ethics than the rest of the industry I am impressed. On the other hand the industry is so shit for workers it shouldnt be a hard thing to achieve.

I’m not hyped by the Switch 2: its expensive, its games are expensive and the launch titles are paltry. It also has competition in the form of the Steam Deck and a range of SteamOS and Windows handheld devices with a huge volume of games available including many at significantly lower prices.
Switch 2 needs exclusives to justify its price and its existence. Switch 1 games with slightly improved graphics (which you have to pay for) and a small handful of launch titles make the Switch 2 a bad proposition for anyone except diehard fans at this point.
At the moment there are no compelling 1st party games in the pipeline. 3D Mariocart and Donkey Kong Bananza seems to be it for now. No new Mario platformer, no Zelda, no pokemon at launch. Everything is old games with better graphics, and much of it available on other platforms like PC with better graphics already anyway (e.g. Cyberpunk 2077 - a 5 year old game which most people have played and is still better on PC or PS5/Xbox; why is that a compelling launch title?).
Nintendo has a lot of work to do - I think there is a real risk the Switch 2 will be a flop if they dont get 1st party exclusives out before the holiday season.
That’s almost every console launch ever though. Switch 1 had an even weaker launch lineup when it comes to exclusives.

But the Switch was a unique form-factor at the time that did not have direct competition for most of its life. Nintendo essentially created the hybrid handheld console segment. As previously mentioned, there is much more competition this time around, including the much cheaper original Switch.

NO it’s not worth buying, too expensive for PS3 graphics, expensive games, locked ecosystem you can be banned from which essentially bricks your device and a low repairability score from iFixit. Get a steam deck instead.
I think the average PC gamer on Lemmy isn’t going to see the value in the Switch 2. I’ve personally seen that for people that want things to just work the switch is a great console.
The Switch 2 is getting a little greedy with paid upgrades to switch 2 performance for switch 1 games, and that goes against the “just works” ethos.
I’m a Nintendo fan (of their games, not their business practices), have owned all of their consoles (even a Virtual Boy) and I don’t plan to go anywhere near a Switch 2 unless Nintendo gets humbled again. They’re at “Sony at PS3 launch” and “Microsoft at Xbox One launch” levels of arrogance currently (not to mention “Nintendo at 3DS launch”). The PS3 eventually came down to a reasonable price, but the 360 was my first and last Microsoft console.
I’m an Australian so I’m not 100% sure on what you’re paying for other consoles at the moment, but the switch 2 hardware is cheaper than the base disc PS5 slim and Xbox series X over here. Don’t even get me started on PC hardware.
Xbox raising their prices to $80 isn’t a good sign. Sony increased the price of the PS5 over here recently even though it won’t be subject to any tariffs, to subsidise their losses in the US.
All that is to say that Nintendo aren’t being so anti-competitive relative to the industry that I think they’re going to be forced to drop prices
I can only speak for the US market, but there’s no precedent for Nintendo having a lower-powered console priced similarly to the competition. They’re asking people to pay close to the same price for a console that’s significantly weaker. Maybe portability is so popular that people will go for it. We’ll see how it does after the diehards all get theirs and the normies decide whether or not to buy.
The Switch 2 at 450 is still cheaper than Sony and Xbox’s launch pricing when adjusted for inflation. Kind of in line with previous generations over the last 30 years.
$80 games are more expensive than they have a right to be for sure, but the hardware I think is reasonably priced.
Bear in mind Switch 2 being a portable console puts it in a different category of device to PS5 and Xbox series consoles.
My problem is doni have time for new games, we have a switch for my daughter and we barely play it. I like Nintendo games but I have a hard enough time completing any game. I think there’s one or two games in my entire Xbox collection I’ve actually completed.
My problem is only having maybe an hour or two late evening I’ll play something for a week, try something else because I get tired of playing the same thing then forget what I was doing in the other game and want to start over.
If I was going to get a handheld I think I’d much prefer the new Asus rog that Xbox worked on
The new Asus Xbox would be really cool if they got quick resume working. That would then be a really decent Game pass + windows handheld machine. I can’t see myself moving away from my steam deck OLED for a while, quickly resume is the killer feature.

I think it‘s a tier below 8. The tracks feel big and empty to me, the original MK8 courses felt like a smooth rush to race through, in World I often find myself slugging through an overly broad straight. Maybe there‘s some stuff to unlock still that‘ll make the experience more exciting, but so far it‘s kinda underwhelming.
I have the Switch 2. MK world is nice I guess, but it’s nowhere near what 8 was. It feels like they were so proud of their connected gimmick they decided they would create nothing for this episode.
8 cups, almost all of them redone old tracks. The “highways” connecting them feel very similar except a couple areas (and those include, again, bits of old Mario Kart tracks). I mean, the way they redid these old tracks is cool, but base MK8 also did that very well with its 4 retro cups, and had 4 main cups full of awesome new tracks. And that’s before DLC/Deluxe added 4 extra cups. Not counting the pass for the Tour tracks, those were subpar.
There’s a lot of music… But apart from that game’s theme, all of it is remixes from Mario games. The karts also are almost only rides from previous episodes.
The free roaming mode is frankly not that great. I had loads of fun messing around in Forza Horizons games, but here it’s just a bit boring. Challenges must be activated and interrupt your driving, they’re mostly so easy you can mess up and still clear them, and though they do track records, they don’t do anything to make you want to improve them. Also you don’t meet other players. For fuck’s sake, the last actual Mario game had you meet and play seamlessly along random people!
MK World is like 90% fueled by nostalgia. This is not what I expect from a new Mario Kart game.
I broadly agree, but I’ll add that knockout tour is where the game and its open world design really shines. That should probably be considered the main mode for this game rather than grand prix. I hope that they’ll add a 3-lap “classic grand prix” mode at some point. The world in free roam does feel quite empty unfortunately.

I have owned every Nintendo console, but skipped on the first Switch because I was a bit upset with how they treated the Wii U. I get why they let it go so early – lower sales numbers – but was still disappointed. I’m a gamer. I had Xbox, PlayStation, and PC to play with… so I wasn’t worried about lack of games.
I was thinking about getting the OLED Switch when that model came out, but figured I waited this long, might as well wait a bit longer for the next system. Glad I did because with the Switch 2, I now have a back catalog of games to pick from instead of the small amount of launch titles… with faster speeds and visual enhancements.
Not sure if original Switch owners need to buy the 2 right away, however. They could probably wait a year or so when more titles come out.
As a Switch 1 owner, I’m definitively gonna wait to finish my current Switch backlog, and also probably for the Oled refresh. But since I got my Deck, I barely touched my Switch, so it will probably take a long time 😆.
With that in mind, though, since the Switch 2 runs Switch 1 games with better performance (even ones that don’t have paid upgrades), I’d wonder if it might not still be better to finish out the Switch catalog on Switch 2 anyways just so you can have consistent framerates on some games.

Mainly I think we’re at the point where new consoles, now including the Switch, are more like upgrading your PC. Get the newer model to run existing games better.
Games are going to be releasing for both Switch and Switch 2 for a while, so there’s not much incentive to upgrade unless the very small list of Switch 2 exclusives is enticing right now. But if someone’s priority is playing through older games in higher quality now that it is possible to do so without pirating, there are a lot of reasons to upgrade.
It took several years for PS5 to get to the point where it was probably worth it for exclusives alone (and may still not even be there yet for many), but it was worth getting day 1 if there were PS4 games someone wanted to play at higher resolutions and/or framerates, and they didn’t mind the price.
Actually on the topic of price, also worth acknowledging that the market is a bit fucked, and existing consoles have only gone up in price since release, in complete disregard for earlier trends where they usually drop in price over time, so that could be a other reason for someone to want to get in on it early.
That’s exactly what I’m saying. It’s not totally nesessary to buy yet. Besides, they’ll have a catalogue of games that are heading to Switch 2. So no need to jump the gun just yet.
I really hope there‘ll be a lot more Switch 2 patches. Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Pikmin 3/4, Octopath Traveler 1/2, all of these could run 1080p60 in handheld easy and I‘d love it!
I think the switch 2 will sell perfectly fine along with it’s games. But I also think both consoles and games will sell slightly worse.
This drop in sales will push them into more anti-consumer practices which will sour people against Nintendo. But this is going to be a slow 5+ year process.
That’s understandable. It’s been like that since the late 80’s with Nintendo. I was born in1976 and I’ve seen some stuff in my lifetime.

I’m sure the console is fine. But everyone buying one is a huge problem. It’s her another underpowered handheld / tv console. The fans are blinded by specs that will only work on a few games. They honestly believe every game will run 4k at 120fps… I think it’s wild to sell a console with an LCD and muddy HDR over it. But yet again the super fans eat it up like it’s the greatest thing to hit gaming.
And the biggest baffle to me… for over a decade people have been bitching and crying over $70 games… Those same people are now saying “eh, $80 ain’t bad for what you get” What!? …
Not to mention that A LOT of games are PAY TO UNLOCK FPS, and not one Nintendo “switch 2” game comes with it’s DLC except for cyberpunk. (Which does run 120fps at 4k btw)

The Console Arena is totally one sided to a select few companies. If other companies could enter and put a dent into Nintendo and the like. We’d be in a much better situation.
I think it’s only worth buying a Switch 2 if you’ve never owned the Switch 1. With how continuous the console is and how similar the experience is, only marginally improved, I don’t think it’s a good idea to get carried away by the hype and buy it just because.
A whole lot of negative replies about the Switch2, but for me it was a matter of timing. My og switch battery is failing, and I wanted to be able to play handheld or on the go again without having a huge battery pack strapped to it. So I picked up a Switch 2. I might even try attempting to replace the Switch battery now that I have a fully portable console again.
I don’t like that you cannot turn on the Switch 2 using the Home button on a original Pro Controller. That does piss me off quite a bit because I am not shelling out the cash for a Pro Controller 2. Other than that I do like the new speed with which it can play games.
What I like, screen is almost as good as the oleds, games with patches play and look better (BoTW and ToTK, been playing echoes of wisdom) Mario kart is a blast. Can boost headphone volume to much louder levels after disabling the limiter.
What I don’t like. no USB c video out on xr glasses or portable monitors. virtual game cards are regressive. game key cards should register for a month or at least a few weeks. having to put one in every time for a downloaded game is dumb. battery life is ass.
hopefully more switch one games get patched to take advantage of the hw. looking forward to Metroid
Maybe by Christmas I’ll be interested, but for now the switch 2 is just a fancy new restaurant that only serves a few pricy side dishes alongside food I can enjoy anywhere else in town.
