Amazon? Really? I could come up with several reasons why not to partner with Jeff Bezos and supporting trump it’s just one of them.
Amazon is giving this service to Gnome for free. If anything, this is hurting them.
Would you drive a Tesla because it’s free? I wouldn’t. Sure, getting a free car sounds great, but I’m not gonna be a walking billboard for Tesla and basically help them shove even more cash down their greedy throat.

Let’s take a moment and back up. And you’re scenario, you say you wouldn’t drive a Tesla if it was free, but would your tune change if you needed a car to get to him from work if you had a car that was broken down and needed to make sure you got to work and get necessities for yourself and for your family.

The benefit for Amazon is good PR and supporting open source projects their engineers use.
People will bitch and moan and scream about this, but it’s free and Gnome doesn’t have the money to pay for it elsewhere.
It’s a real problem in the FOSS world. Users don’t want to pay, but they’re very happy to demand features or for the devs/organisation to be run in a certain way or for them to spend a shit load on XYZ, all in order to be ideologically pure.
This is the real world. Unfortunately given their lack of capital, Gnome needs freebies for this, and AWS was offering.
Amazon is a bad company, but since many bad actors are contributing to the Linux kernel, I’m willing to just think about the good stuff it’s gonna allow Gnome to do…still it sounds bad…
For some reason, this has been getting a lot of push back on Gnome’s Mastodon.
Keep in mind that this changes nothing for you as a Gnome user. It changes little even if you develop for Gnome. However, this frees of a lot of resources for Gnome. Gnome is getting the infrastructure for all their needs for free (for now) and don’t need to worry about maintenance of the hardware.

How does free infrastructure hosting from AWS hurt anyone? There’s no privacy concerns and this helps Gnome’s development.
The only way this will hurt is if Gnome is not prepared to switch away once their credits are up.
If you don’t understand why people don’t want to use something that associates with Amazon or Bezos willingly, I’m not sure how to explain it to you, to be quite frank.
I’m worried about vendor lock-in. Once GNOME has migrated everything to AWS, Amazon might start being a dumbfuck and abusing their “clients”, as they abuse a lot of other organizations as well.
I can’t think of any specific threats from this, but knowing Amazon, they put more effort into coming up with vile shit that i could even think of.
Gnome isn’t locked-in. For being an important open source project, AWS has given Gnome credits so that they can use AWS free of charge for years. Once those credits expire, they are free to leave. So long as they do their proper preparation to migrate away, they get multiple years of hosting for free.
Gnome has already been in this circumstance. Their free hosting from another provider expired so they moved. Though as I’m researching this, I can’t find the sources I’ve read this from.
