I think the typical answer is to start digging into the definition of “love”. I am personally of the opinion that the number of self serving, narrow ways to interpret the Bible significantly outweigh the number of holistic, neighborly interpretations. The history of Christianity is filled with selfish power hungry people using whatever means necessary to justify their quests for power and domination.

How the Bible is interpreted is a perpetually evolving art practiced differently by different group. Do the laws of the old testament apply to modern life? Is the book of Revelation a metaphor for how to live or a literal prophesy for the end of the world?

I personally find great amusement at some of the contrasts between what Jesus teaches and what are taught in the epistles. Most amusing, of course, is how openly Jesus associated with women vs what Paul keeps espousing at the end of 1 Corinth 14 and 1 Tomothy 2.

So to more succinctly state it, since God is manifested in significant part through our actions, the rules are ultimately made up and the points don’t matter. statements like “God loves everybody” is as a declaration of the state of the universe in so far as it is an admission of one’s own moral values. It is imperative to espouse and defend this narrative that God loves everybody because otherwise it becomes false.

If this constructed version of God doesn’t make sense, we can perfectly swap “God” and “Mother Nature” as they are interchangeable concepts. I find some rest in the belief that our existence aligns with the inherent nature of the universe, even if we can be real boneheads about it sometimes.

  • This idea would seem to rest on the logic that any given poor person would be less likely to be corrupted by power than a given rich person (presumably due to their experiences being poor). In my experience when you give someone who is used to destitution access to power and resources their instincts are incredibly self serving. Being part of the proletariat does not automatically indicate any amount of empathy, humility, self control, forward thinking, or any other characteristic of a good, fair leader.

  • Pretty sure the way we as the American people chose to receive this beating was that at one of the billionaire orgies between 2023 and 2024 Musk, absolutely trashed, turns to Soros and says “you think you’re so good for getting Obama elected in '08, well hold my beer and watch this!” The rest is redacted history that will make an excellent documentary in about 10-20 years

  • I don’t feel like we need to spend much effort predicting how the “wealthiest generation of history” with relatively unprecedented amounts of wealth inequality is going to play out. Rich assholes will feel entitles to become even richer with only extremely weak societal checks to keep them from running amuck. I expect the leadership of gen y to be - at a baseline - even more violent and exploitative than the current leadership meta

  • Even though i do get the privilege of being born into a lucky circumstances, i have to watch all of my peers in my age group suffer while i am somewhat compelled to spend all my time with folks in older generations because all of my fellow millennials are too busy being exploited or exhausted just to keep their head above water.

Will i be one of like a handful of millennials who fair a passable life? When i get to a possible retirement will i even have any peers to hang out with? Am i a shithead for not sacrificing enough of myself to make a better world? What could i even sacrifice to make a better world? after all there needs to be organizations to turn sacrifice into change, and all the organizations are run by boomers who are quite comfortable because millennials will barely even show up to community social groups, let alone commit to leadership let alone play the bullshit social games to fight for power and control.

What even is the point for me - an okay off millennial - to fight for the cause of the rest of us when everybody in our age bracket seems to be lining up to give the best excuse for giving up? If things are already this shit, then surely the odds are in y’alls’s favors to take a cause and go into the community and make a belligerent stand?

  • One cannot control their thoughts.

I want to know what you mean by this.

I don’t know that i fully disagree with you, I don’t get to will myself to instantly think any thought, but i have a plethora of tools at my disposal to manage my thought processes. when i find myself thinking thoughts that violate my values i introduce counter thoughts to balance it all out, or sometimes i just cut it off with a “we’re done here for now” kinda vibe. I can control what kind of thoughts pop into my head in response to external stimuli by altering my values. Meditation and prayer also provide a means to alter or dissipate the flow of thoughts. Many of my values are at odds with each other, so i must partake in a seemingly constant exercise of identifying and resolving the dissonances in my values either internally (changing my values) or externally (attempting to alter the world around me to match my values).

  • I understand and empathize with your frustration, as a commuter long boarder i have similar sentiments about how politeness can inconvenience me because of the precautions i have to take to stay safe. I would, however, like to point out that you are complaining about people putting in an earnest effort to exercise empathy for you; those who don’t bike or otherwise do not have the experience to know that predictability is key, but they are otherwise attempting to care for your well being
