Yup. We have had two sets of ratties live with us. After the second set died a few days apart I swore off any more. When their needs are met they are loving, and care for each other, and us, without reward.
If you schedule allows and you aren’t entirely rational, chinchillas are stupid, nocturnal, fluffy rats. The advantage is they live longer if treated well. The disadvantage is that nocturnal bit as their warning scream is loud. A girl I dated had a pair for 15 years before they passed.
To each their own. But I have had rat friends who were more trustworthy than many humans.
Seriously rats can be really great. The worst part is their shorter lifespan.
