Trump made the comments ahead of this weekend’s scheduled talks involving U.S. and Iranian officials in the Middle East sultanate of Oman. Trump earlier this week said the talks would be “direct” while Iran has described the engagement as “indirect” talks with the U.S.

“If it requires military, we’re going to have military,” Trump said. “Israel will obviously be very much involved in that. They’ll be the leader of that. But nobody leads us, but we do what we want to do.”

We’re going to war with Iran, now? That’s a horrible idea. The US is not well situated to prosecute a war against a large and very well armed opponent in that part of the world. Losses would be atrocious on both sides. The only way this is acceptable is if Donald Trump is leading an infantry charge on the front lines at the get go.

I’m completely baffled that so few people (and particularly, so few people who held real geopolitical power in the last decade) seem to understand this. I’ve been saying this since 2014, and saying it A LOT since 2022.

Nuclear nonproliferation is dead. It died when the Budapest Memorandum was revealed to be worth less than the paper it was written on. Nuclear weapons are now - and will be for the foreseeable future - the absolute final word in guaranteeing sovereignty and territorial integrity, full stop.

Always when I have a genius plan that doesn’t go like I wanted I tell people of my other great plans so they don’t notice my genius plan was fairly stupid.
