Firefox is kind of a sticky situation, because while they changed their ToS, removing some terms about “sale of data” to comply with overbroad legal terminology, they didn’t actually change their privacy policy. The internet freaked out, because Mozilla did a shit job of explaining the change, and now it exists in a space where it’s lost a lot of community goodwill.
I still use it, though, and I think it’s good that you mentioned that you have to configure it to be more private. I’ll have to check more into Waterfox, too.
Thanks for making these guides!
Yeah, my understanding that it mostly came down to incredibly poor communication on their end. Still trying to find a link that succinctly explains both sides of the situation
That wiki article is perfect! Showcases both sides nicely - thanks!
Worth noting here that Orion is made by Kagi, a privacy focused search engine.
Yup! A huge fan of their Search Engine. pity that Orion is only on iOS atm.
And macOS, though they are starting work on porting it to Linux, I worry they are going to abandon WebKit for that.
You know WebKit browsers, like Epiphany (GNOME Web), already exist, right? I don’t see why they’d feel the need to abandon WebKit in their Linux port.
Vivaldi has native ad-blocking and it’s quite good. The top extensions were always better, but I never see ads and most of the time YT is fine with maybe 12–24hrs of annoyance at times waiting for updated lists. Consider it 95% uptime for YT, 100% for all else.
Vivaldi is an excellent choice for that and many other reasons.
What telemetry is Apple receiving from Safari?
Don’t know the specifics, but this article goes into some of the data for each browser. https://sizeof.cat/post/web-browser-telemetry-2025-edition/#apple-safari
Not to sound heartless, but the nasty political leanings of Brandon Eich are less important it this context than the fact that Brave is spyware and a cryptominer.
Not heartless at all. Some people care, others don’t, and some people like the fact. I did include a link to a thread that goes into those events to try to cover both.
I’m in the process of reworking all older guides as I’ve learned a lot along the way. Will be posting them over the coming week or two.
