Seriously, I don’t get it.

One person collected\created a ton of them and started to post them in droves to set a trend other would follow for a while. While the amount of them is moderate by reddit standards, smaller Lemmy userbase and it’s c/shitpost community got quite overwhelmed with that, up to the point you can’t scroll for a minute without seeing another moth meme. People got divided over the mothposting as you can see in that thread, with some choosing to ban\downvote\report them arguing they aren’t fun, too numerous and are mostly from one account, similarly to spam\flood; and some like me found it as a field for humor\creativity while bored, an event akin to what I’ve enjoyed back on r/196.

I’m not informed of any deep meaning or conspiracy theory behind it, it’s just a silly posting routine probably being someone’s project. But you can draw weird conclusions yourself, like it being a lamp seller’s campaign in the summer when their demand takes a nosedive due to more sun hours each day (yay, Lemmy’s so popular it has ad campaigns!); or, you know, it may be a commentary on how human race is captured by the idea of a weaponized atom that may eventually end it - and this is relevant when discussing the ongoing ME conflict that some see as a WW3\NewVietnam starter.

Do with that information what you will. Now that I think of it, it could be funny if the original mothposter wrote your post instead, so people mildly annoyed with their little mischief got to write a reply and then got an Aha moment recognising the username in a different community. Maybe the mothperson is you?

I had one fly into the hinge of my laptop last night. What a weirdo.

    I just wanted to say

My just-woke-up brain combined these two into “how do you cope with moth memes”

I decided to start blocking the people posting them. It turns out, it was literally one user making it a spam problem. I blocked one or two more on principle and haven’t seen a moth meme since.

It’s really interesting how there are quite a few people who don’t realize it’s only one person posting them. Like yesterday I was talking to someone who complained about ‘all the people’ posting moths and it was quite funny when he realized it really was just one single user. I guess not many look at the usernames.

Shitposters on Lemmy tend to do stuff in waves and one particular user posted the memes to the point of spam which artificially started this one. That’s all there is to it.

Personally, I’ve enjoyed the resurgence because of nostalgia for that time of memes. Even shared a bunch to another server and got praise lol

The shitpost and meme communites used to be full of really good memes that made it so much better than Reddit crap. Then it devolved into actual shitposts about beans and moths and other stuff that’s not funny after the 2nd time. So now they really are just fucking trash communities, full of AI slop, political crap, and actual useless shitposts…worst part is that mods don’t seem to care… rip Lemmy. It was supposed to be a great Reddit alternative and instead is ruined due to mod negligence.

Do you know what actually reading a reply carefully is? The shitpost community was one example I used. It also used to be actually funny original meme content. Man, why am I wasting my time replying to clowns? Enjoy actively making Lemmy worse and have a good day.

These shit-quality shitposts are like the spaz kid at lunchtime showing you his “meme collection” against your will. I get serious secondhand embarrassment from seeing them. It’s sad seeing Lemmy’s shitpost community devolve into 9gag/ifunny.

Yep, and it’s very strange that we’re both being downvoted for having this opinion. I have no idea why the hivemind here is determined to make this a 9gag-like dogshit platform. It’s incredibly confusing. Why doesn’t anyone care?
