My apologies if this post goes against the rules (Mods, please delete if so), but can anyone recommend to me a good free digital art software I can download? So far someone has mentioned Krita, but I was wondering what people here found to be the best? I am familiar with Illustrator, so I have an understanding of how vector graphics editor and design software works, I’ve just been out of the art game for ages, so I have no idea what’s out there.
Thank you!
Depends on your needs and goals. Traditional art etc Krita is solid. Runs everywhere. Windows Mac Linux Android and iOS. There are some more focused on pixel art like pixieditor. And still more focused on vector art like inkscape.
Thank you!
Blender also has grease pencil, and pressure sensitive pen support for their sculpting tools if I recall correctly.
Ah yeah, I’ve dabbled in Blender before. Good idea!
3D:
- Blender
2D:
- Paint.NET
- Krita
- GIMP
Vector graphics:
- inkscape (garbage user interface but it works)
- Blender (convert grease pencil into curves then export SVGs)
Thank you for your thorough response!
Ya welcome. Also, if you want better vector software than Inkscape but not expensive like Adobe look into “Affinity Designer”
It’s basically the same as illustrator with a few key differences but also has an iPad app too.
As someone who spent obscene amounts of time growing up on/learning photoshop, Krita is pretty much the closest. In terms of workflow for photography, non-destructive editing, etc. it only takes very minor tweaks to adjust but otherwise feels native. There’s also tons of resources for it.
I’ve heard good things about Inkscape in terms of vector graphics, but haven’t used it yet myself.
Worst case scenario you try out a program and move on, and since it’s free there’s very little pressure.
Good luck!
Thanks!
