It’s also possible that I just personally feel what is being posted isn’t a meme but most disagree, especially given the amount of upvotes received. And of course, the boundary sometimes between a meme and inspirational picture can be blurry, and something probably difficult to hammer down in rules…
I admit part of why I stopped contributing anything (even though I am supposed to be the change I want to see) is because I feel it’s less a space for nice memes and more for a space of inspirational encouraging pictures nowadays with titles like “it’s true,” “it really does”. I’m glad people get value out of it and am wondering if anyone knows of a Threadiverse community for memes free of depressing/doomer or political memes, or if I’ll need to make it myself.
Thanks so much for your feedback! I’m posting virtually all of the content, and do a lot of other posts on lemmy. I post what I come across, and nice pictures are easier to find than nice memes. I’m mod, and I’m happy with it being nice but not purist meme definition.
I really invite you to post your own nice memes here, I wouldn’t have to post so much if other people were doing so. Alternatively set up your own community and post what you want to see. Overall the solution to your problem is totally in your hands 😊
Honestly, you’ve got a couple things going on
- Probably (I’m not checking) a lot of it is being posted by the mod, who is trying to get engagement in hopes of getting more people to post. And it’s HARD. Both coming up with enough content, much less very targeted (“memes”)
- if you do come up with a alternative community, you’re going to see a lot of cross posting
- people aren’t necessarily looking to see which community it came from, it just came across their feed, it’s cute, they upvote. If I posted a cute bad on superbowl the mod would yank it for being offtopic, but people would upvote it assuming it’s in an appropriate subreddit because that’s what they’ve signed up for. (Which is a similar problem with aww vs pics , I’d imagine)
And yeah, not a lot of memes, but the mod is trying their damndest since it’s hard getting a community to be active enough (less than 1% ever post, from what I can tell, and it’s hard to tell active counts based on subscriber counts )
I wish I had better options for you. My bet would be 50% of the people here would also join yours, but people would still be very casual about upvoting things.
But thanks for the kick - I need to go post.
I appreciate seeing someone explaining this aspect of the answer- it’s ludicrously difficult to get anyone to post at all
I get it. People on the whole don’t interact, they just want to scroll, and then there’s the “did they just go back to reddit after trying it here”. What’s the saying? “There are dozens of us! dozens!”
You might be better off making such a space yourself (with a clever name that hints at the purpose, preferably), because so many of the ‘meme’ communities get non-meme and wrong-meme posts. For an obvious example, the plain meme communities get political ones posted all the time (even ones that explicitly ban the topic-specific memes), and it’s frustrating to say the least.
I wish people were more careful about frigging posting to the correct communities in general, let alone weirdos finding themselves in communities they don’t like just to end up trolling what they don’t like to see.
