Back when I was managing a team, we had a new guy that I was on-boarding. I’d run the. Through all standard procedures and then get them to shadow others in the team, then swap so they are being shadowed and guided.
One day I told him to pair with someone in the team for an afternoon. At the end of the day I took him into the training room and asked him how things had gone. He had a big smirk on his face and said “I know why you had me shadow R”, and with a returning smile I said “and why was that?”, “because you wanted me to see how not to do the job.”
The new guy had hit the nail on the head, the person he was shadowing was a huge under performer and was due to go on a performance improvement plan after repeated attempts to give guidance. Anyway I didn’t confirm that is why I did it, but I’m glad that the new guy had come away thinking that, it showed that the training up to that point had been working.
I’m with you on this. I prefer important conversations that require me to make a decision or remember something in writing. Just general conversation about what you got up to on weekend? Fine let’s talk it out.
I understand so many more people prefer verbal communication because it’s easier for them to not have to type or put their thoughts into written words. I just wish more of them understood that it’s not the same for everyone and come to a compromise.
Really depends on the work you do and your personality. For me being in the office makes it difficult to concentrate due to conversations going on around me. It’s great for information gathering, but as soon as I need to do some deep thinking, it becomes a lot more challenging. Plus it’s a lot less comfortable and I have to deal with the commute, taking up some of my energy before I even get into the office
I’m so envious that you have it as a job and a hobby. When I started coding I’d hoped I’d be one of those people that just whips up stuff in their free time for fun, but after finishing work I just find myself not wanting to code 😔
I have a piece of shit Samsung TV that needs replacing. When an app crashes I found holding down the standby button for like 20 seconds and then turn it back on seems to kill the apps on the TV so I can reload them.
No idea if it’s a legit fix; but if not the placebo effect makes me feel better. Maybe other TVs could work the same way?
I’m in the UK and it is on Netflix. I believe it’s a syfy show. I think there are 4 seasons now but only S1&2 are available on Netflix here.

I’ve really been enjoying Resident Alien. It kept being advertised to me and I finally caved. Alan Tudyk plays an alien trying to be human so well.
I wish people would all collectively agree that employers should have to pay for commute time to their offices. I would like to think this would quickly bolster WFH.
Creepy, I too had a video popup on YT about it. Really sweet idea though around the memento for your cat!
I bought a £6 metal one, it’s only a small one as I still have plenty of mobility. I imagine if you have a bad back or reduced mobility you’d want a longer one. I think the brand was called Zomake? I bought it many years ago, it’s still in great condition apart from the logo wearing off.
I know I may seem old for saying this, but I highly recommend getting a decent metal shoehorn. Makes putting on shoes a breeze, and no need to wreck your fingers or do that foot-heel pumping thing. The backs of my trainers last so much longer now too!
Unfortunately there is a pyramid scheme in place filled with fools that think they can become that one and are willing to fight against those “beneath” them.
Thank you for taking the risk. I’ll be chilling it from now on.
I really enjoy this chocolate, my only complaints are:
Thanks is for this info, today I learnt about woody breast!
I’ve noticed over the years that chicken breasts have been having an awful texture now and then. I highly suspect it’s because the demand has grown so high the quality has dropped. This has reduced the amount of chicken I tend to eat. I highly suspect if we ended up getting the chlorinated chicken I’d shift more towards becoming a vegetarian.
I hate speaking on the phone for a couple of reasons, but the key one is not having time to think of how I want to respond to any questions that may come up. If someone at work calls me out of the blue without prior context and time to mentally prepare, I don’t answer the call.
Using uBO, but have noticed a slightly longer delay of a few seconds between hitting play and the video starting, but I can deal with that over being forced to watch 30s of ads.
