  • The joycon connection isn’t the only use of magnets I believe. The steam deck has a bunch of magnets too and it’s the reason Valve didn’t include Hall effect sticks in that device. They did a bunch of field tests and found that they created more problems than they solved. Folks who’ve modded their ROG Ally with HES reported similar issues. It just seems like with the current tech they’re just not compatible with handheld consoles.

  • That’s actually not an uncommon experience when you have sleep paralysis. Normally when you sleep your body paralyzes itself so you don’t hurt yourself when you’re unconscious. The paralysis ends when you wake up but sometimes you can partway regain consciousness while the paralysis is still in effect. And for some fucking reason when that happens we tend to hallucinate a tall dark figure leaning over us. A “sleep paralysis demon”. So between being asleep, paralyzed awake, and awake, plus the dream/hallucination it feels very real.

I’ve had it once or twice and the last time I remember it the figure would raise a fist over his head and bring it down onto my chest, but stop just short of actually hitting me. He did it a few times seemingly testing the effectiveness of my paralysis. Then I woke up. It was utterly terrifying. Back then I would set my clothes and shoes out for the next day on a chair next to my bed. I noticed the next morning the shoes had been kicked over towards the bed like some had been standing next to it. But I couldn’t remember exactly how they were set out the night before… still creeped me the fuck out for a while.

  • As long as you have PP, users streaming remotely from your server can do so without PP (or the mobile app unlock). The client user charge is only for accessing servers that don’t have PP. Still insane they’re charging anything at all for streaming private content from a private server to a private client though.

Thank god for jellyfin. I have a feeling plex would have gone a lot harder with this update if there was no competition.

  • While I agree with this sentiment on the surface, using a privacy focused application that was built by folks who yield to cops as part of their identity doesn’t inspire long term viability in that space.

It’s the same reason I moved away from Proton when their CEO told us all where his values lie. It’s not outright backtracking on privacy promises but with so many comparable alternatives in this space, why chance it with the bootlickers?

  • I mean if you want to dig into it, Apple is a company that makes most of its from money from selling tech. They spend a lot on highly effective advertising, but they pay actual advertising companies to do that. So I don’t think that qualifies them as an advertising company unless you’re just trying to be dismissive. You make your money from making and selling tech, you’re a tech company first.

Google and Meta make the vast majority of their money by selling ads and selling user data to other advertising companies so they can create their own targeted ads. That by definition makes them ads companies more than tech companies.

Microsoft sells mostly software/services to enterprise clients, they’re a B2B software company. Amazon too with AWS, etc. I read the other day that with how big NYT’s word games have gotten they’re more of a gaming company that also sells newspapers these days.

Anyway, yeah you can call Apple an advertising company or a fashion company or whatever but the fact is they’re more of a tech company than most of the other companies you probably think of as tech companies. Apple-produced tech is regularly compared to the likes of Nvidia, Intel, and AMD. You can’t say the same for the other top “tech” companies.
