Tony’s Chocolonely is a Dutch chocolate manufacturer and seller. Created in 2005, the company’s market share in the Netherlands was 18 percent in 2018.
In 2022, the Thomson Reuters Foundation awarded Tony’s Chocolonely the Stop Slavery Award in the category “Goods and Services Companies”. This award recognizes companies and organizations who have set a high standard for eradicating slavery, illegal child labor, and human trafficking from their supply chains.
Tony’s Chocolonely was ranked second on the 2023 Chocolate Scorecard, which rates chocolate companies according to their human rights and environmental credentials: traceability and transparency, living income for cocoa farmers, child labour (absence of), deforestation & climate, agroforestry, and agrochemical management.
And their chocolate is just so, so good.
Yeah, a d i c t i o n warning. The bar you buy is likely disappear sooner than you would have thought ;)
Sold in the US too, if you’re also stuck here! Looks like
Targetand Safeway cary them. Going to try it…EDIT: Actually, I recommend you don’t shop at Target in light of their anti-DEI “Bud Light u-turn”…
They are good chocolate too. I like the green one, it’s dark chocolate and almond. They also got them at Harris Teeter and Walmart. I think Walmart has the smaller mixed bag of candy instead of the bars.
Interesting design, by the colours and font it actually looks American.
I’m now curious to try but it doesn’t seem to exist in Spain, sadly.
Maybe in your local bio/eco shop, since they’re made from ‘slaverly-free’ cacao they might be too expensive for a regular supermarket to make a profit on them.
In Austria they started selling in all big shops maybe like two years ago. At least that’s when I realized them. I love the chocolate and worth the price for me :-)
They have been doing really well here too. Their initial goal was to become ethical chocolate/cacao wholesalers but they knew they had no chance starting a purely b2b business. So aside from selling their own bars, but over time they grew and now sell to a lot of other brands including the no-brand stuff the supermarkets sell with their own logo (how do you call that? We call them house brands, but that makes no sense in English). They are getting a serious market share as sell, with an ever increasing bigger part from their b2b branch now. More here: https://www.tonysopenchain.com/
how do you call that? We call them house brands, but that makes no sense in English
In British English they’re called “own-brands”, which makes less sense tbh.
For Americans it’s either generic or “store brand” which usually has its own name i.e. “Great value” for Walmart
In American English we call the house brands or store brands.
I thought it was American as well. It’s on our shelves. I love the background… the chocolate itself is pretty damned good, and I do not often have sweets and candies.
It’s definitely sold here in the US, and looks like something you’d find at a circus.
It’s pretty damned good, though.
Red, white, and blue are the colours of the Dutch flag.
Those are also the colours of the US flag, the obnoxious font is very reminiscent of Texas hold’em salons, and let’s be honest Tony is not a Dutch name at all.
Look, I totally get it man, I’m just as propagandized as anybody else to just associate certain patterns to US products.
I really enjoy this chocolate, my only complaints are:
- It says not to chill it - I prefer cold chocolate
- The chocolate is not divided up equally, which for some reason annoys me…
It says not to chill it - I prefer cold chocolate
I tried, and they don’t actually come to take it away if you ignore that and chill it anyway. :)
Thank you for taking the risk. I’ll be chilling it from now on.
I freeze them. Love me some frozen chocolate and haribo gummy bears.
Does it take long for the gummy bears to freeze?
Not really few hours and they’re frozen solid.
The chocolate is not divided up equally, which for some reason annoys me.
This is intentional on their part, it’s to show that the profits in the chocolate industry are unequally divided.
It’s a good concept but it does feel like a forced gimmick a. I would really prefer some regularity in the pieces possibly that’s just a quirk of neurodivergence.
Oh no my neurodivergence makes me buy chocolate made from literal child labour
Even more, the chuncks depict countries in Africa:
Wow, TIL! Been a fan of Chocolonely for many years now and never realized that!
Glad it’s intentional, I’ve been labouring under the impression someone did it by accident!
no idea you weren’t suppose to chill them. this part of the world, that’s practically impossible, it’ll be a puddle if I leave it out anytime of year.
The circle one is my favorite piece!
Heck yeah, me too!
Chill chocolate? Are u in an asylum? What in the name is wrong with ya.
I don’t see why you can’t chill it. I would have to guess they say that so you don’t ruin the temper. Maybe chilling it speeds up the white film and they had lots of people complaining?

I discovered Tony’s a few months ago and I’ve been loving their bars. A bit pricey, but it’s worth it.
They arent as expensive as you may think, they usually weigh more than the “normal” bars you get, so if you calc the price per weight its actually competetive

I’d say it’s closer to £3 than £4, certainly where I am up north.
Its become our favorite brand, tastea great and slave free, win win.
Check out the price per gram, usually tonys are heavier than the alternative.
I always thought it was more expensive as well until i recently saw that the default ive been buying had less weight, so if you looked at price per kg it was actually pretty much the same.
Also i buy less choclate now but i prefer quality.
I don’t find it that much better personally compared to other chocolates, but I think it’s worth it if you buy a chocolate bar twice a year like I do
It’s more expensive for a reason. They are fighting for fair wages and no child labor in the cocoa industry. That work costs extra. Big corps constantly cut corners and exploit their labour. This chocolate is not too expensive, it’s the rest that is unfairly cheap.
Not a big fan of chocolate, but this is good… Very good 😊.
Red packaging (as shown here) is milk chocolate, blue packaging is dark chocolate. There are other variants too.
Aaah, thanks I didn’t know that.
Dark chocolate is the best.
Careful with the dark chocolate. It failed the lead tests.
Canadian here. Is there anywhere to get reasonably priced bulk chocolate chips or chunks for baking, in Europe, that ship to North America?

Fuck Amazon. I won’t pay an oligarch or a fascist dictator a penny so they can invade my country and turn us into a puppet state. We have not used chocolate for months for not finding a good option yet.
No thanks on Amazon or any American company or product.
This is the whole reason for the question.

I live in a country on the brink of annexation from the most powerful military in the world. I am asking about non American products in a group specifically for avoiding American products and services and buying strictly European goods. You answer with the most obvious, fully fascist company inside the US you can come up with that treats its workers like slaves and so much more regardless of all this information being obvious and right before you. What did you expect other than an attack of the fascists south of our border. If you’ll note not any of that vitriol was directed at you though you took it as a personal attack.
Perhaps it’s not me being the douche canoe.
do they have vegan versions?
Now that’s a weird coincidence, I only learned about Tony’s chocolate a few days ago cause there was a big product recall poster in my local supermarket and it kinda stuck in my mind cause I was wondering how TF do stones end up in chocolate. :D
It’s a great chocolate except for the large amounts of lead in their dark chocolate: https://www.consumerreports.org/health/food-safety/lead-and-cadmium-in-dark-chocolate-a8480295550/
I mean, who doesn’t love some ethically sourced lead in their chocolate?
I was so sure it was American when I first saw it in stores, both the name and packaging design seemed very American. It took a few months before I stopped and read through the info on one of the bars to realize it’s something good.
French fair trade brand with a lot of choice: Éthiquable
Not sure if they export much. The prices in France are reasonable considering cocoa prices make even junk chocolate quite expensive.
