The decision by Nexstar comes as the broadcast station is seeking FCC approval for its $6.2 billion mega deal to acquire Tegna, a deal that would make Nexstar by far the largest owner of local TV stations in the country.

The FCC would have to raise the 40 percent ownership cap in order to let the deal advance.

Quote from The Hollywood Reporter. Just like CBS with Colbert.

Washington Post fired its black opinion editor because she quoted Charlie Kirk for saying:

“Black women do not have the brain processing power to be taken seriously. You have to go steal a white person’s slot.”

Let’s stop taking the Washington Post seriously

Because they are institutions that are trying to provide comprehensive discussion since the world is grey. We don’t have to like it, but that’s probably why they allow it. Plus, yes, they make money.

I’ve seen this before. It would really be a lot nicer if these quotes all had sources. Just showing someone a list of quotes with no context doesn’t really scream “credible” to this target audience.

I’d argue you could’ve trusted them MORE before the Fairness Doctrine was murdered. Certainly still needed to apply skepticism and discernment though

I’d argue you could’ve trusted them MORE before the Fairness Doctrine was murdered

Red Scare politics would suggest they’ve always been untrustworthy. “Fairness” Doctrine only ever included two liberalized perspectives. Meet The Press wasn’t bringing on Michael Parenti and Murray Bookchin to debate David Duke and Ayn Rand.

This is why the fediverse matters. Kimmel or Colbert, right now they can turn to platforms like YT and will still be able to get the voice out.

But guess what. The same corporatism that control ABC control google. You live on their platforms your message is dependent on their approval.

The future is free; the future is federated.

Out of curiosity, I went and checked the front page of r/all. Of the current top 25 posts, these are the ones which pertain to the Kimmel situation followed by their respective subreddit:

        /1. news /2. askreddit /3. cringetiktoks /7. technology /9. nofilternews /10. politics /13. fauxmoi /14. facepalm /18. whitepeopletwitter /23. popculturechat

The post on r/politics pertains to before the show was pulled, but it was posted after it was officially pulled. Some subreddits do delete repeat posts that are about the same story to keep the discussion all in one thread, so maybe that has happened with that subreddit?

[Edit: added slashes to prevent auto-formatting from changing the numbers]

I’ll try to find the one I navigated to but they kept getting closed for being “off topic”.

Also I’d argue the FCC making a threat and ABC actually pulling the guy are 2 separate stories.

I don’t think it’s some Reddit wide cabal as much as R/Politics sucking

How we monetize might need to change. Maybe less ads, more donations? Budgets will have to go down, but that’s not so bad if the leash finally comes off.

Canceled my D+ and Hulu subscriptions and wrote in other:

“Capitulating to Trump’s version of fascist America and knee jerk reaction to Kimmel made me rethink why I should give you my money. I don’t even like or watch Kimmel, but you are allowing free speech to be violated. I don’t support free speech abolitionists.“

Even this framing is dishonest - he didn’t make comments about Charlie Kirk, he was mocking MAGA for rushing to weaponize his death. ABC shut down his show for a valid criticism of MAGA.

They’re just getting started. Colbert was fired as a demand to allow the sale of CBS’ to Larry Ellison, 2nd richest man, and a vicious MAGA. With Colbert out, the decks were cleared for the sale.

CBS used to have the reputation of being the gold standard of broadcast news. Now it’s just going to be one more mouthpiece in the Conservative Propaganda Machine.

“Why can’t we put all the people that disagree with our speech in jail? Why?!”

Free speech absolutist means they want to be able to say the horrible things they believe out loud so they can encourage others to act on those beliefs. At the same time, they believe its their “right” to continue to hold everyone in their life hostage and force them to tolerate their lies and hate speech.

No one wants to give up their comforts. We’re all just sitting here letting this happen. No one wants to get violent or have a general strike or stop paying taxes or camp out in front of the white house or stop buying shit… We’re afraid of losing things that are going to be taken away in the future anyway.
