Its too bad this is the way they feel they need to show their partners affection on Valentine’s day; a huge waste of money directly into the maw of the capitalist machine.

Absolutely! Don’t waste your money on meaningless trinkets! And even better, if you ask me – don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day at all! My partner and I don’t do anything for it, we just do things for each other whenever we feel like it, and we’re happier that way.

I met my partner one v day and we first said I love you the following year the day before, so it has significance for us. She gets me a bag of Lindsor chocolates, I get her a bouquet of flowers, we write a card and are happy.

It about contributes to the capitalist machine as much as anything else I do: watch TV, read a book, go to the theater, drive to work, pay a guy to fix my roof…

My partner and I stay far away from everywhere on Valentines Day. She also wears a 3D printed ring or the “nice” Amazon $9 ring, so I think I partially lucked out.

Similar here. Our engagement/wedding rings we bought together. Since we have a coming Bank account it anyway doesn’t matter who pays. Making a nice surprise is of course always nice, but that doesn’t need to be materially valuable.

For us, we are designing her “real ring” ourselves to either make or have made, but its very modest and more about the band design. We are very outdoorsy so that drives simplicity, too. Personally I have a cheap silicon ring, and love it since it barely feels like I have anything on.
